Dominican pop singer Anais has already conquered the Latin version of American Idol and the Billboard charts. Now she just has to win over SMOOTH readers—which, given her obvious assets, should be much easier.

You were born in the Dominican Republic but raised in the Bronx. Which do you consider home?
I feel like both of them are my home. I don’t go to DR that much, but you can never forget where you come from.
Do the people of DR still claim you, even though you spent most of your life in the States?
Yes. They love my music over there. Whenever I go there, they show me so much love. I’ve been invited there by the president on a few occasions for events he was having. I became famous here in the States, but I’m grateful to have the support of my native country.
What was your childhood like?
It was crazy. I got into a lot of fights in school because a lot of the girls were jealous. Trouble just seemed to find me all the time. But I was still a very good student. I was always able to get good grades.
